18 June 2006

It now seems that we shall not know the YHA's decision on Ty'n Cornel until mid July. We will send out another newsletter after that.

You can now become a Friend of the Elenydd Wilderness Hostels.

We plan to have website pages for photos and articles about the Elenydd hostels and the surrounding area (past and present). Please send your articles to Sue and photos to Chris. Thank you.

Erbyn hyn, mae'n debyg na fyddwn yn gwybod beth fydd penderfyniad y YHA ynghylch Ty'n Cornel tan ganol mis Gorffennaf. Anfonwn gylchlythyr arall pryd hynny.

Erbyn hyn, gallwch ddod yn 'Gyfaill i Hosteli Unigeddau'r Elenydd'.

Bwriadwn gynnal tudalennau gwefan ar gyfer erthyglau am hosteli'r Elenydd a lluniau (hen a newydd) ohonynt ac o'r ardal o'u cwmpas. Anfonwch eich erthyglau at Sue a ffôtos at Chris. Diolch.

A Charitable Trust, 'Elenydd Wilderness Hostels', is in the process of being registered with the UK Charities Commission.

Supporters have offered nearly £30,000 in donations towards buying Ty'n Cornel and Dolgoch when the Trust has been set up. We have over 300 supporters so far and we aim to expand this considerably by the time the YHA closes Ty'n Cornel at the end of October.

The YHA unexpectedly brought Ty'n Cornel onto the market at an asking price of £125,000 on 14th May. Two of the Trust's supporters have put in a bid to buy it and the Trust is negotiating an agreement with them to run and maintain it for an initial period of 5 years. We think that we can make a success of this with the backing of the Trust's supporters.

The YHA asked for best offers for the hostel to be in by 5th June and it remains to be seen whether it will accept the bid backed by the Trust. We understand that the YHA will make its decision within the next week or so.

We would run the hostel under the YHA Enterprise scheme so it would continue to appear in the YHA handbook and on its website, but be listed as a private hostel. This means that the hostel would continue to be advertised as it has been by the YHA, but we also plan to market and advertise it in different ways.

Any thoughts or comments would be welcome.

Ar hyn o bryd, mae 'Hosteli Unigeddau'r Elenydd' ar ganol cael ei gofrestru yn Ymddiriedolaeth Elusennol gan Comisiwn Elusennau'r DU

Mae bron i £30,000 wedi cael ei gynnig fel rhoddion gan gefnogwyr tuag at brynu Ty'n Cornel a Dolgoch unwaith y bydd yr Ymddiriedolaeth wedi'i sefydlu. Hyd yn hyn, mae gennym dros 300 o gefnogwyr, ond rydym yn anelu at gynyddu'r nifer yn sylweddol erbyn i'r YHA gau Ty'n Cornel ar ddiwedd mis Hydref.

Rhoddwyd Ty'n Cornel ar werth gan y YHA yn ddi-rybudd ar yr 14eg Fai 2006 am bris o £125,000. Mae dau o gefnogwyr yr Ymddiriedolaeth wedi rhoi cynnig i mewn i geisio prynu Ty'n Cornel, ac mae'r Ymddiriedolaeth yn trafod cytundeb gyda nhw i redeg a chynnal yr hostel am gyfnod cychwynnol o 5 mlynedd. Rydym yn credu y gallwn wneud llwyddiant o hyn gyda chefnogaeth yr Ymddiriedolaeth a'i cefnogwyr.

Gofynnodd y YHA am i gynigion fod i mewn erbyn y 5ed o Fehefin, ac arhoswn i weld a fyddant yn derbyn y cais a gefnogir gan yr Ymddiriedolaeth. Deallwn y penderfynith y YHA o fewn yr wythnos neu ddwy nesaf.

Buasem yn rhedeg yr hostel o dan gynllun Menter y YHA (YHA Enterprise), felly byddai yr hostel yn parhau i ymddangos yn llawlyfr y YHA ac ar ei gwefan, ond byddai'n cael ei restru fel hostel preifat. Golyga hyn y byddai'r hostel yn cael ei hysbysebu fel ag y mae trwy'r YHA, ond bwriadwn ei farchnata a'i hysbysebu mewn ffyrdd gwahanol hefyd.

Croesawn unrhyw sylwadau sy gennych.

Newsletter 1

May 2006

This is our first newsletter to keep everyone informed of the progress of our campaign.

A meeting was held in the Memorial Hall in Tregaron last Saturday 29 April to make everyone aware of the present situation and to discuss future plans. There were 42 people present at the meeting including representatives from the local community and apologies were received from a further 59. Many other people have expressed support via email, letter, etc. Minutes of the meeting are available from Bill if you would like a copy.

  • The campaign has been re-named 'Elenydd Wilderness Hostels'.
  • It was decided to set up a Charitable Trust and charitable Trust status will be applied for.
  • A committee was set up. The first meeting will be in Ty'n Cornel hostel on Saturday 20 May. Other supporters are welcome to attend - please read the minutes first.
  • Donations made before and at the meeting to cover the running costs of the campaign have been put into a bank account in the name of 'Elenydd Wilderness Hostels Campaign'.
  • A business plan has been drawn up for running Ty'n Cornel and/or Dolgoch hostels ready to submit when we apply for funding. Whether we will be able to buy 1,2 or all 3 hostels will of course depend on how much money we raise.
  • A constitution is being drawn up.
  • A web site is being set up. If you have any suitable photographs - local scenery, hostels interior or exterior, people enjoying them - or comments, articles or information about them, please send them to Chris.

Until our site is up and running the Cambrian Mountain Society have kindly offered to include details of our campaign on their site.

We have had some media publicity:

  • an article and photograph in the Guardian newspaper on 26 April 2006
  • an article and photograph in the Cambrian News on 27 April 2006, with a follow-up article due in May
  • BBC online news

A list of possible organisations has been drawn up to apply for funding. But this will take time and time is limited - Ty'n Cornel hostel is coming up for sale within the month at a price of £125,000! But if we can give the YHA details of promises of funding for at least part of the price of the hostel, then they have agreed to give us more time to raise the rest and not put the hostel on the open market. Dolgoch hostel is not coming up for sale until next year.

In order for us to approach outside sources for funding we need to give some indication of what can be raised by supporters. Therefore we are asking you as an individual/group to consider donating, without commitment, an amount. We need an indication of your intentions; if you feel you could consider making a donation please write to or e-mail Bill. If you know of any other individuals / groups / possible sources of funding could you pass on a copy of this newsletter. Note: We are not asking at this stage for actual money - just an indication of intent.

To give you some idea of the figures involved - to buy both Ty'n Cornel and Dolgoch hostels would cost approximately £250,000. If we could raise 10% of that figure from individual/group donations then we are in a good position to apply for funding from organisations. Thank you to those generous people who have already pledged almost £11,000 !

Remember - if we lose these unique hostels now they will never be replaced - they will be gone for ever! You can help to ensure that these gems will be there for future generations to experience and enjoy. We need to act now!
