Ty'n Cornel

Our 2 supporters bought Ty'n Cornel on 5th Jan and we have taken over the running and had our first hostellers. You can book it through the YHA.

Lock

The insurance requires that we lock the door. Very reluctantly we have fitted a combination lock. The code will be given to those making a booking and will be changed from time to time. Members of the Trust who would like access during the daytime should contact us before going.

Fire

Unfortunately the hostel's shed burnt down on 8th January. We think it was an accident. No-one was there so no-one was hurt. This leaves us temporarily without a cycle shed, but we hope that it can be re-built before too long.

Dolgoch

We are hoping to buy Dolgoch later in the year and urgently need your support.

Blaencaron has now been sold by the YHA to a private buyer. The Trust was unable to raise sufficient funds in time to save it. It is very sad to see this wonderful little hostel being lost after more than 50 years, during which it was largely run by voluntary effort.

Dolgoch

YHA will put Dolgoch on the market in 3 months time and if we are to save it as a hostel open to all we have to act quickly! We shall only have one chance.

Campaign

It was resolved at a well-attended and useful meeting at Ty'n Cornel on 15th October that we should go all out to rescue Dolgoch. We shall write to YHA shortly proposing that we buy it for £110,000. If they agree we shall campaign flat out to raise as much money as we can.

Donations

In the 8 weeks since we asked for money promised earlier to be sent to the Treasurer, he has received about £28,000 and membership fees have produced another £2,000. This is an excellent response - many thanks to all who have donated and become members. If you are hesitating, you can make donations to the Trust specifically to buy Dolgoch and, if we are unable to do so, we can return those donations (contrary to an earlier footnote). So please do not be held back by concerns about where your money might go if we were outbid.

Grants

We have applied for grants from various funds to buy Dolgoch but this is proving more difficult than we had hoped. More money seems to be available for restoration and repair than for purchase of buildings. We are continuing to try hard to obtain funds but these applications take a long time to process and might not be in time.

Joint Purchase - are you interested in buying Dolgoch jointly with the Trust?

We are inviting supporters who are able to put in £5,000 or more to come forward on the understanding that their investment cannot be taken out for, say, 10 years. The Trust would run the hostel, applying any operating surpluses to improvements or future repairs. The other partners would agree to the Trust buying up their shares as and when it can. If you are interested please contact the Chair or Secretary. We are drawing up a legal framework for this.

Dolgoch

Ymhen tri mis, bydd Dolgoch ar y farchnad agored ac os i'w gadw fel hostel ar gyfer pawb, rhaid gweithredu'n gyflym! Un siawns sydd.

Yr ymgyrch

Daeth nifer dda i gyfarfod buddiol yn Nhy'n Cornel ar 15 Hydref a phenderfynnwyd y dylem wneud ymdrech gwirioneddol i brynu Dolgoch. Y bwriad yw ysgrifennu'n fuan at YHA yn cynnig £110,000 ac os cytunir, rhaid ymgyrchu'n galed i godi cymaint o arian a phosib.

Rhoddion

Codwyd tua £28,000 yn barod ers i'r Trysorydd lansio'r apel 8 wythnos yn ol, yn ogystal a £2,000 o ffioedd aelodaeth. Mae hyn yn wych a diolch yn fawr i bawb sy wedi ymateb. Os oes diddordeb gennych, peidiwch petruso - gallwch wneud rhodd i'r Ymddiriedolaeth yn bwrpasol at brynu Dolgoch. Os nad yw'r ymgyrch yn llwyddiannus, cewch eich arian yn ol (sy'n wahanol i'r hyn a ddywedwyd eisioes). Felly, does dim angen poeni am golli'ch arian os methwn.

Grantiau

Rydym wedi ceisio am grantiau o sawl ffynhonell ond heb fod yn or-lwyddianus. Mae mwy o arian ar gael am waith adewyddu yn hytrach na phrynu adeiladau o'r newydd. Parhawn i ymdrechu ond mae pob cais yn cymryd amser hir.

Os oes diddordeb gennych, cysylltwch a'r Cadeirydd / Ysgrifennydd (cyfeiriad isod). Mae fframwaith cyfreithiol yncael ei baratoi.

Ty'n Cornel

Running Ty'n Cornel

Progress is being made in the preparations for running Ty'n Cornel from 7th January 2007 when our lease starts. We reviewed insurance, bookings, wardening, laundry, fire regulations, work parties, website, publicity etc. at the meeting. We plan to have some kind of celebration of the 're-opening' next March or April. A definite date will be announced shortly and invitations will be sent out. A 'celebrity' will be asked to officiate.

Bookings

Ty'n Cornel is open for advance bookings from 7th January 2007 onwards. It will cost £10 per night (£7.50 for under 18's). Those making bookings up to mid-March will have to be self-reliant as there will not normally be a volunteer warden at the hostel. Access by car can be difficult in hard weather and there is no telephone or mobile phone signal at the hostel. You will also need to remove your own rubbish. All bookings are through YHA central reservations. If you have any difficulties when booking or comments on the process please email the Monitor or contact the Secretary so we can try to improve the system if necessary.

Volunteer Wardens

We plan to cover at least the period from mid-March to mid-November. If you would like to warden at Ty'n Cornel in 2007 please contact our Co-ordinator. There are still weeks to fill. Note that all our volunteer wardens must be YHA-trained and CRB-checked. YHA courses seem to be in short supply at the moment - contact the YHA. It is recommended by CRB that as we are a new organisation all our volunteer wardens will need to be freshly CRB checked by the Trust, especially if their CRB check is more than 3 years out of date. To this end three of our members have received CRB training and are qualified to carry out CRB checks. If you are attending the next meeting you could be CRB-checked there. This would be easier than having to post off documentation. If you wish to do this please check the CRB website to see what documentation you need to bring with you.

Gwirfoddoli fel warden

Mae sawl wythnos eto i'w llenwi. Nodwch bod rhaid i'n Wardeiniaid gwirfoddol gael hyfforddiant YHA ac ymchwiliad CRB. Mae cyrsiau YHA braidd yn brin ar hyn o bryd - cysylltwch a'r YHA. Gan ein bod yn gymdeithas newydd, mae CRB yn awgrymu bod pob darpar warden yn cael archwiliad CRB newydd, yn enwedig os bu'r un diwethaf mwy na 3 mlynedd yn ol. Publicity

We are working on a publicity leaflet which should be available soon. If you have access to a suitable outlet - a walking group or cycling club etc. - please contact Publicity. Do you take an outdoor activity magazine - walking, cycling, bird watching, etc.? Can you get an article or letter about the Elenydd hostels published? If you can, please tell us, and try to include our web site address in the article or letter.

Hysbysrwydd

We have recently put on some excellent walking route maps by Martin Hanks, which are easy to print off. You can also print off membership or donation forms (or contact the Secretary for these). Please try to spread our website address: www.elenydd-hostels.co.uk.

Membership

We now have about 210 members. Membership costs £10 and, if you are able to 'Gift Aid' it, the Trust can claim another £2.80. Contact the Membership Secretary. If you have access to our website, you can print off a membership form. There are over 600 addresses on our mailing list so we are hoping for lots more members.

Blaencaron

We approached YHA asking them to allow the Trust to extend the life of the hostel by letting us run it for another year but we were not successful. The hostel is now being advertised at £130,000 ono. and it may go as a B+B if it gets change-of-use planning consent - unless a rescuer comes 'out of the blue'. It is very sad to see this little hostel being lost after more than 50 years of being run largely by voluntary effort.

Surveyor

We still need a surveyor to assess the condition of Ty'n Cornel and of Dolgoch. A supporter has kindly offered to pay her/his expenses if professional services are given free. Contact the Chair.

Furniture

Ty'n Cornel will keep its existing furniture but the fireside armchairs may not comply with new fire regulations. Does anyone have a wooden armchair they wish to donate (to avoid chemical fire retardants)?

Trees

Would you like a seedling tree from the Doethie valley? Small native trees grown from Doethie seed are available until the end of March in return for a donation to the Trust. Rowan, crab apple, ash, hawthorn, blackthorn, alder, downy birch, grey willow, etc. Contact the Secretary.

Coed

Hoffech brynu coeden fechan o Gwm Doethi? Mae sawl math gwahanol ar gael, tan ddiwedd mis Mawrth, am rodd ariannol i'r Ymddiriedolaeth. Cysylltwch a'r Ysgrifennydd.

Meetings

Coming to our meetings is a good way to help the Trust develop and bring in new ideas and expertise. Our next 2 open meetings are at Ty'n Cornel at 11am on Saturday 2nd December 2006 (not 3rd December at Dolgoch as advertised previously) and at Dolgoch at 11am on Saturday 20th January 2007 (not Ty'n Cornel as advertised previously). Everyone is welcome. Outline agendas are available from the Chair. Book beds with YHA central reservations if staying Friday or Saturday night.
