About Us and our Hostels in Wales, UK

The Elenydd Wilderness Hostels trust (EWH) is a registered charity ( registered charity number 115946) and was established in 2006 when the YHA announced it was to close and sell its hostels in the Cambrian Mountains.

With the hard work and dedication of many volunteers the Trust now runs two of these hostels Dolgoch and Ty’n Cornel independently and is committed to maintaining, improving and extending the use of the hostels in an environmentally sympathetic way.

In 2007 it raised the funds to buy Dolgoch and then secured a major grant for refurbishment work here. Many improvements have been made at Ty’n Cornel and this hostel was purchased by the Trust in 2013. As part of its commitment to running the hostels in a sustainable/ eco way, the Trust has installed solar powered lighting and water heating at Dolgoch. Ty’n Cornel has mains electricity supplemented by solar panels which provide hot water, showers and some heating; the installation of solar panels in this hostel reduces its environmental footprint by replacing about 50% of the mains electricity used. There is no land line telephone.

You can help to preserve these unique hostels for future generations by becoming a member of the Trust.

By becoming a member of the Trust you will receive regular newsletters keeping you up to date with all the latest news about the hostels. Why not come along to one of our regular open meetings as well?

You could also help by becoming a volunteer warden or taking part in a working party to refurbish the hostels; perhaps help with fundraising or publicity or make a donation.

As a member you will also be entitled to substantial discounts on products from the following well known national retailers of outdoor clothing and equipment: Cotswold Outdoors, Snow and Rock, Cycle Surgery, Runner Needs, Black’s, Milletts and Ultimate Outdoors.

And, most importantly, stay at the hostels when you can and encourage others to do the same. ‘If we don’t use them, we might lose them’.
